An article in Healio HemOncToday about the high costs of proton beam therapy features the prostate cancer research study chaired by LDI Senior Fellow Justin Bekelman, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. Penn, which opened a proton beam center in 2010, has partnered with Massachusetts General to conduct a randomized controlled trial of proton therapy for prostate cancer. The 5-year study is designed to determine whether proton beam therapy leads to a better quality of life and, if so, whether that benefit is worth the additional cost.
