Andrew Bindman, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics and an affiliated faculty member within the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is a primary care physician with federal and state health policy experience who has practiced and taught clinical medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for over 30 years while also conducting health services research to improve care within the health care safety net. He has overseen the development of a nationally recognized academic division of general internal medicine focused on improving the care of vulnerable populations and a state-university partnership with California’s Medicaid program that promotes translating research into policy. He was appointed as the Director for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) within the US Department of Health and Human Services in 2016 and he served in that role until the end of the Obama administration.
