Resident Physician, Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Perelman School of Medicine

Dr. Brown is a resident physician at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, and a Dripps Scholar. She received her medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. She also received a PhD from the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at that time.

Prior to medical school she worked in the Diabetes Research and Training Center at the University of Chicago with Drs. Elbert Huang and Marshall Chin at the University of Chicago evaluating treatment preferences and cost-effectiveness of care for patients with type II diabetes as well as quality improvement initiatives in community health centers. During her PhD, she worked with Dr. Scott Halpern researching how transitions into and out of the ICU contribute to poor outcomes among patients with acute respiratory failure, and whether quality of care is affected by ICU workload. She was among the first to recognize that ICU readmissions were highly susceptible to adverse incentives, and her work was instrumental in having them rejected as a national quality indicator for ICUs. She has received numerous awards for her work including the Saul Winegrad, M.D. Award for Outstanding Dissertation and Clinical Epidemiology Research Prize, for paper entitled “The Epidemiology of Intensive Care Unit Readmissions in the United States.” She also received an F30 grant for her dissertation work for which she was awarded a perfect score.

Her current work investigates the trajectory of care among adult and pediatric patients with do not resuscitate orders who present for surgery, and examines the risk factors for hospital readmissions after day surgery among pediatric patients. She plans to do a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesia and to become an investigator in Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care.
