Major: Health & Societies, Health Policy & Law

Minor: Bioethics

Ashley Anumba is a junior at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Health and Societies with a concentration in Health Policy and Law, with minors in Bioethics as well as Law and Society. After graduation, Anumba plans on attending law school and starting a career creating more comprehensive and equitable pathways to addressing health concerns of low-income and minority communities. Although she has not chosen a singular focus, some areas of interest include health insurance, improving access to care, food policy and regulation, in addition to global health systems particularly in Western Africa, Nigeria specifically.

Anumba is working on two SUMR research projects. With Holly Fernandez Lynch and Dr. Emily Largent, she works on understanding the ethical and regulatory issues regarding pre approval access to investigational drugs for those that have exhausted all medical treatment options. With Dr. Shoshana Aronowitz, she will help evaluate the unmet health and social needs of individuals waiting for court hearings at the Philadelphia Center for Criminal Justice.

At Penn, Anumba is Executive Director of firstServices, an on-campus laundry business and one of ten other student run businesses within Penn Student Agencies. Along with running a company, Anumba also works at Penn LDI, serves as the External Liaison for the Penn African Student Association (PASA), and is a student leader for Peers Helping Incoming New Students (PHINS). Apart from her jobs and club involvements, she is part of the Penn Track and Field team and is nationally ranked in the discus. When she is not competing for Penn, she can be found at track meets around the world competing for the Nigerian National Track and Field team. In her free time, Anumba enjoys listening to music, in particular Afrobeats, cooking, spending time with friends, and watching Netflix.
