She hopes to work to reduce healthcare inequities and educate the community through her passion for health services research.
During SUMR, Kaliya will be working on two research projects. The first, with Dr. Jaya Aysola evaluates how primary care patients are socially connected and how their social network relates to their knowledge and lifestyle choices that reduce cancer risk. The second is with Dr. Angelico Razon which explores the decision making of young adults with special health care needs as they transition into adulthood.
At the University of Pennsylvania, Kaliya is a board member of Community School Student Partnerships, a mentoring organization which serves local Philadelphia students. She is also a lead tutor through Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). Additionally, she is an intern in the Netter Center’s Thompson Civic Engagement Internship Program. This program seeks to increase collaboration and integration among various University-assisted community schools programs.
