Amlan Dey Avik
Avik is a junior at Rice University majoring in Operations Research and Mathematical Economic Analysis. He is interested in applying mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to study healthcare systems and improve population health outcomes from a global perspective. He hopes to pursue a career in quantitative research.
Through the SUMR program, Avik works on two research projects. Under the mentorship of Dr. Divya Pandey, he studies the effects of USAID funding cuts on infectious disease outcomes in low- and middle-income countries using high-frequency surveillance data and causal inference methods. He also works with Dr. Jasmine Travers Altizer on research examining the impact of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans on nursing home staffing patterns and resident outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across both projects, he contributes to dataset construction, statistical analysis, and quantitative research using large-scale health datasets.
At Rice, Avik is actively involved in the International Student Association and Lovett College, where he serves as a peer academic advisor. He is also a member of Rice INFORMS, where he explores real-world applications of operations research through hands-on projects. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing cricket, watching Bollywood movies, listening to music, and traveling.
