Duke University , Class of 2027

Major: Biology

Minor: Creative Writing and Chemistry

Cameron Haskins is a rising senior at Duke University majoring in Biology and minoring in Creative Writing and Chemistry. She is interested in studying racial disparities in healthcare and is passionate about expanding access to quality healthcare for underserved communities.

With SUMR, Cameron works with Dr. Jazmine Travers Altizer to study how the Paycheck Protection Program affected staffing and resident outcomes in nursing homes during the pandemic. This experience allows her to further develop her science communication skills and better understand how similar programs may support future public health emergencies. Cameron also works with Dr. Yuvarum Reddy to examine the effects of expanding access to Medigap and Medicaid for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Through this research, she hopes to learn more about how public and private programs can help alleviate the financial burden of kidney disease.

At Duke, Cameron volunteers at Duke Hospital and works as a writing consultant for the Thompson Writing Studio. She also serves as co-president of Club Women’s Flag Football and is a member of the Community Outreach Board for the Black Student Alliance. In her free time, Cameron enjoys writing poetry and short stories, spending time with friends and family, and reading.
