Grace Mullins is a rising senior at Berea College studying Sociology. She is interested in studying the social determinants of health and their applications in epidemiology, particularly how behavioral addictions are shaped by both societal and personal experiences, and how intervention strategies can be tailored to individuals’ lived experiences.

During the SUMR program, Grace will serve as a scholar on two part-time projects. First, under Jim Guevara at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, she will help analyze quantitative data from a recently completed study examining the use of community navigators for parents experiencing postpartum depression. She will also work with Danielle Sands and the Literacy Lab at CHOP conducting qualitative interviews with pediatricians across the country who have implemented “Playful Learning” murals within their office spaces.

Previously, Grace conducted research through the Data Science for the Public Good program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she studied the impact of childcare and childcare subsidies on parental labor force outcomes. Through this experience, she developed skills in R, data analysis, and building applications with Shiny.

At Berea College, Grace serves as a Hall Coordinator, managing a team of Resident Advisors. She is also involved in organizations including Girls Who Code, the Ornithology Club, and the Student Government Association. After graduation, Grace plans to pursue a Master of Public Health degree and work in translational research focused on addiction studies. In her free time, she enjoys scrapbooking, baking, watching football, and spending time with friends and family.
