Josef Miller
Josef Miller is a rising junior at Washington University in St. Louis studying Math+Economics and Public Health & Society, with a minor in Creative Practice for Social Change. His interests center on using research in health policy and insurance design to increase patient access to treatment and reduce health disparities among marginalized communities. After graduation, Josef hopes to pursue a PhD in Health Economics or Health Policy to further study the economic burdens and health limitations created by current policy, as well as how future policy can address existing barriers.
As a SUMR scholar, Josef spends half of his time working with Dr. Courtney Wolk, studying the impacts of the expansion of the Penn Integrated Care program and examining structural barriers and inequities affecting patients seeking mental health support. Through this work, he applies both quantitative and qualitative research methods by coding key documents, analyzing large datasets, and interpreting findings. He also supports the development and continuation of related projects within Dr. Wolk’s research team.
Josef spends the other half of his time working with Dr. Victor Roy, where he studies structural barriers and inequities within health insurance and the Medicare Advantage program, including frameworks surrounding racial stratification. His work involves collecting primary sources, coding materials, and synthesizing key findings.
At Washington University, Josef is involved with the Gephardt Institute for Community and Civic Engagement through the Civic Fellows Program, serves as a hotline peer counselor, and leads community service initiatives through the Association of Latin American Students and the Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program.
