Recent transparency regulations have created one of the world’s largest repositories of negotiated health care prices, opening new opportunities for economic research and market innovation. This presentation reviews emerging evidence from Transparency in Coverage data and discusses how improved analytics, consumer facing applications, and policy reforms can strengthen competition and reduce health care spending.

Stephen T. Parente, PhD, MPH

Stephen T. Parente, PhD, MPH is the Minnesota Insurance Industry Chair of Health Finance in Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and Associate Dean of the Carlson Global Institute. As a finance professor, he specializes in health economics, information technology, and health insurance.
Parente has been the principal investigator on large government and foundation funded studies on price transparency, consumer-directed health plans, health information technology and health policy micro-simulation. He is the founding director of the Medical Valuation Laboratory and previously directed the Medical Industry Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota.
He was Chief Economist for Health Policy on the Council of Economic Advisers at the White House, Senior Adviser to the Secretary for Health Economics in the Department of Health and Human Services and adviser to the Congressional Budget Office. As an entrepreneur, Parente is CEO of MyMedVita, Inc a medical price transparency smartphone application; Managing Principal of Health Systems Innovation Network, LLC; and founding angel funder of Morning Consult. He earned his PhD in health finance and organization from Johns Hopkins University, and MPH from the University of Rochester in New York.
