Benjamin Chartock seeks to understand patient experiences in the American health care system and how economics influences those experiences. He is interested in studying the relationship between business and government in multiple health care industries, with a particular focus on how incentives effect productivity and innovation and how information effects consumers and markets. For example, one strand of his research examines surprise out-of-network medical bills.
Ben is a PhD student at the Wharton School's Department of Health Care Management and Economics. He received his bachelor's degree in Economics, magna cum laude, from Cornell University in 2014 and received the Industrial Organization award. Before coming to Penn, he worked at the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Economics, both for the Office of Applied Research and as a research assistant to the director of the FTC's Bureau of Economics. Prior to working at the FTC, he was employed by Bates White Economic Consulting. He has written for RealClearHealth and been published in Health Affairs, and his work has been mentioned in the Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times. He grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and lived in Washington, D.C. before moving to Philadelphia.
