E. Carter Paulson, MD, MSCE is an Assistant Professor in the Perelman School of Medicine and a member of the Department of General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is also affiliated with the Philadelphia VA Medical Center where she has a clinical practice in colorectal and general surgery.

Dr. Paulson completed her general surgery residency and her colorectal surgery fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During her residency, she completed a Master's Degree in Clinical Epidemiology, also at the University of Pennsylvania. Since that time, she has pursued a number of research projects, focused on processes of care and outcomes related to the treatment of GI malignancies, most commonly colorectal cancer. Most recently, she has been involved in running two randomized clinical trials at the Philadelphia VA related to the efficacy and delivery of colorectal cancer screening to the veteran population.Her research has been published in leading surgical journals including Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and Annals of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Paulson received a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania.
