Jeffrey C. Lerner, PhD served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the ECRI Institute from 2001–2017. ECRI Institute (formerly the Emergency Care Research Institute) is the world’s largest independent nonprofit health technology assessment organization, researching the best approaches to improving patient care. It is designated as an Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and as a Patient Safety Organization (PSO) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Lerner created, secured funding for, and implemented numerous programs in technology assessment. He was Coordinator of the Technical Expert Panel of the National Guideline Clearinghouse. He also served as a member of the first Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC) and on the Advisory Board of the U.S. Cochrane Collaboration Center.
He has made major presentations to government agencies and professional organizations worldwide. His articles include “Case Studies on Forecasting For Innovative Technologies: Frequent Revisions Improve Accuracy” (Health Affairs, 2015), and “The Case for a National Patient Library” (Health Affairs, 2010). He has authored editorials, op-eds, book chapters, and book reviews, such as the Journal of Legal Medicine’s Book Review Essay “Rescuing Science from Politics, Regulation and the Distortion of Scientific Research.” Dr. Lerner also reviewed for journals such as JAMA, Health Affairs, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
Dr. Lerner received his MA, MPhil, and PhD from Columbia University, where he was awarded three University President’s Fellowships and other honors.
