Dr. Mikkelsen’s research aims to understand the impact of critical illness on an individual’s health trajectory and to improve the short- and long-term outcomes of the critically ill. His work on sepsis, and life after sepsis, heightened awareness of an emerging public health problem: sepsis survivorship. As a result, in partnership with the Commonwealth's Department of Health, The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and national organizations, Dr. Mikkelsen is leading efforts to improve the lives of sepsis survivors by reducing hospital readmissions after sepsis.
