Alexander Adames (pronounced uh-dahm-ehz) is a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Statistics from The Wharton School and is a recipient of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Pre-doctoral Fellowship. Adames is primarily interested in the study of social stratification and social mobility across racial and ethnic groups. His research agenda is motivated by questions regarding the effect of childhood socioeconomic disadvantage on post-secondary and post-tertiary outcomes, including occupational attainment, educational attainment, income attainment, and physical and mental health outcomes. More precisely, he is concerned with the extent to which education is an equalizer of opportunity for people from different early childhood conditions. To address these research questions, Adames is interested in applying methods for panel data analysis and causal inference.
Prior to Penn, Adames was a CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has had experiences doing research on Black men’s health, sleep inequality, health insurance and mortality, sexual consent on college campuses, and lived theology within the civil rights movement.
