Daniel Lavi Southren, MD, MBA is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Southren’s research focus is on clinical outcomes and economic impact of surgical and nonsurgical interventions in chronic pain and musculoskeletal care. During his residency training in Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan, where he was awarded the position of Clinical Scientist Translational Anesthesiology (C-STAR) Resident, he focused on evaluation of opioid use patterns and risk factors for chronic opioid use following interventional pain medicine procedures. His previous work has been published in journals such as Anesthesiology and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He was awarded the honor of “Research Resident of the Year” while at the University of Michigan, and has been recognized for his work at national meetings.
Clinically, Dr. Southren specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain conditions including neck and back pain, musculoskeletal and joint pain, sports related injury, chronic post-surgical pain, cancer related pain, neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain syndrome. He is particularly interested in the practice and development of advanced procedures in neuromodulation, vertebral augmentation, and other minimally invasive approaches in the treatment of painful conditions in order to improve function and quality of life. Dr. Southren diagnoses and treats patients at Penn Medicine Rittenhouse, Penn Medicine University City, and the Penn Spine Center. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. He completed a general surgery internship, followed by an anesthesiology residency, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Southren then completed a fellowship in interventional pain medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. He also earned his MBA from Columbia Business School.
