Emma A. Blackson, PhD, MPH, is a postdoctoral researcher in the Program for Research on Men’s Health at the University of Pennsylvania. As a social epidemiologist and scholar, Dr. Blackson investigates how structural racism and structural violence manifest as place-based carceral exposures that shape population health equity. Grounded in Public Health Critical Race Praxis and Black critical theory, her research uses intra-racial, spatial, and multi-level analyses, and various administrative datasets to examine perinatal, cardiometabolic, and mortality/longevity outcomes among hyper-marginalized communities. A Philadelphia native and former educator, Dr. Blackson earned her PhD in Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences from Tulane University, her master’s degrees in Public Health and Social Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BS from Temple University.
