Marc L. Ruggiano, MBA is an experienced health care business executive making the transition to academia. Ruggiano is currently a Candidate for Doctor of Education at Penn’s Graduate School of Education, where he is researching medical education and medical decision-making, with current emphasis on understanding and valuing the factors that influence medical students’ choice of medical specialty.
Ruggiano is a Fellow at the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science and recently served as Chief Marketing Officer for the Executive Education and Lifelong Learning unit at the UVA Darden Graduate School of Business, both in Charlottesville, Virginia. Prior to embarking on this journey, Ruggiano was the Head of Customer Relationship Marketing and Management at Humana, a leading U.S. health insurer. At Humana, he was responsible for a team of analytics, marketing, and technology experts that developed, delivered, and measured the impact of more than one billion health-related consumer interventions annually. Earlier in his business career, Ruggiano consulted to many health care companies on consumer and physician engagement strategies, and on related data analytics and technology capabilities. His clients have included Bristol-Myers, Pfizer, Hoffmann-La Roche, United Healthcare, Cigna, and other U.S. and global leaders.
Ruggiano started his career in business as a consultant with McKinsey and Company, where he worked on the initial disease management program for Kaiser-Permanente, after serving as an Officer in the US Navy, where he was a Flight Instructor for the F-14 Tomcat. Ruggiano holds an MBA from UVA Darden and a BS in Computer Science from the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland.
