Xavier Diao, MD

Xavier Diao, MD is an Attending Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine. His academic and clinical interests include LGBTQ mental health disparities, teaching along the undergraduate-graduate medical education continuum, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and the psychiatric care of transitional age youth and young adults. Dr. Diao is the recipient of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health Outstanding Resident Paper Award, the Lois T. Flaherty, MD Best Resident Paper in Adolescent Psychiatry Award, and a NIDDK T35 Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant to investigate the association between metabolic indices and prodromal psychosis in adolescent patients. He is a former volunteer counselor at the Trevor Lifeline, the only nationwide crisis intervention and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth. Dr. Diao received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and finished his residency training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with further training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He also completed a psychoanalytic fellowship at the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute.
