Lawton Burns, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Hospital Mergers

LDI Senior Fellow and Professor and Chair of the Wharton Health Care Management Department Lawton Burns is quoted in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article about hospital mergers and consolidations in Pennsylvania. The article looks at the implications of the continuing acquisition of non-profit Pennsylvania hospitals by large out-of-state for-profit hospital chains.

Some fear that such moves could effect the quality or cost of care for local communities but Burns notes that there's a "dime's bit of difference" between for-profit chains and non-profit counterparts. He said patients "“shouldn’t anticipate too much change in terms of overall quality of care or costs" because those are factors generally driven by a hospital's physicians, and the physicians that were onboard before a merger will remain onboard afterward.

Burns, PhD, MBA is also Director of the Wharton Center for Health Management and Economics.
