A new study of the geographic variation in the availability of transplant kidneys for children led by LDI Senior Fellow Peter Reese is the subject of an article in

the Huffington Post.

The work, published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, found "substantial and very concerning geographic variation in deceased kidney waiting times for children across the United States." The various states' organ wait times ranged from a few weeks to a few years.

"The main problem here is a shortage of really good kidneys for children," Reese told the Huffington Post. "[They need] very-high-quality kidneys that will function well and last long while they grow up."

The study recommends the restructuring of how organs for children are distributed.

Reese, MD, MCSE, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine.
