Sean Hennessy, Philadelphia Inquirer, Potassium Study
A study co-authored by LDI Senior Fellow Sean Hennessy that showed potassium supplements may increase survival in chronic heart failure patients is the subject of a Philadelphia Inquirer article. The research looked at 180,000 patients in five states who were also taking a "loop diuretic" as part of their treatment.
Hennessy, PhD, PharmD, Associate Professor of both Biostatistics and Epidemiology and Pharmacology at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, said, "Using potassium supplementation for patients receiving loop diuretic therapy may be a relatively inexpensive way to save lives. In today’s climate of seeking cost-effective measures to keep patients healthy, this is a therapy that certainly merits additional consideration."
