The Growing Role of Trained Lay People in Neighborhood-Level Population Health

A recent study of the effectiveness of community health workers led by LDI Senior Fellow Shreya Kangovi is the subject of an extensive article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Kangovi, MD and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, is the director of the newly created Penn Center for Community Health Workers

The study, whose co-authors included LDI Senior Fellows Nandita Mitra, PhD; David Grande, MD, MPA; Richard Shannon, MD; and Judith Long, MD, showed that pairing community health workers with hospital dischargees made it 50% more likely that those patients would follow up with recommended primary care providers.
