In the three-day final symposium that has closed each of the last 19 years of the University of Pennsylvania's Summer Undergraduate Minority Research (SUMR) programs, 23 students from 17 universities and colleges formally presented the 2018 projects they and their faculty mentors worked on. Jointly sponsored by Penn's Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) and the Wharton School Health Care Management Department, the three-month SUMR program is aimed at underrepresented minority undergraduates and others interested in exploring potential careers in the field of health services research (HSR). It includes intensive orientation to the field and pairs each scholar with one or more faculty HSR researchers to participate in ongoing research projects. Nearly four dozen faculty mentors participated in this year's SUMR program. Below are photos of the 2018 scholar presenters and their mentors. Above, Wharton Dean's SUMR Scholar Chidinma Wilson presents a project that involved using data from electronic health records to identify elderly patients potentially at risk of hospital readmissions. Along with fostering greater diversity within the health services research community, the SUMR program is also very much about the continued generational transmission of interest in the field's opportunities. For instance, in 2002, Penn student and SUMR Scholar Holly Fernandez Lynch (above, right) was a mentee of Pamela Sankar, PhD, Associate Professor of Medical Ethics & Health Policy and LDI Senior Fellow. Fernandez Lynch went on to earn her JD and MBE before becoming an LDI Senior Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Penn Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy where she now works with her former mentor. At the same time, Fernandez Lynch has become a SUMR mentor herself, this season taking Penn SUMR Scholar Mohamed Abdirisak under her wing in a research project focused on Promoting Evidence-Based IRB Policy and Practice through Empirical Study.
