Zara Wermers is a sophomore at Tufts University where she is pursuing a BA in Biopsychology and Community Health on the Pre-Medical track. Zara is interested in the social, economic and environmental realities that have created disparities in health care and seeks to understand how to make a meaningful impact towards high quality and equitable access for all Americans. Her interest in public health has been further enhanced during her internship at a hospice clinic in the Philadelphia area. After graduation, she plans to pursue an MPH before applying to medical school.
During SUMR, Zara worked on two projects. Her first project, under the guidance of Dr. Kristen Feemster, centered on launching an application targeted towards caregivers to encourage the initiation and completion of the HPV vaccine series, and supported the uptake of the entire teen vaccine platform. The second project, under Dr. Scott Halpern, explored methods of increasing enrollment in ICU-based clinical trials as well as a systematic review of literature that aimed to characterize studies focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome.
At Tufts University, Zara is an executive of Association of Multiracial People at Tufts (AMPT) which serves multiracial undergraduates on the Tufts campus by fostering dialogues and advocating for a more inclusive campus community. She also is an executive member of the Sharewood clinic, a free health education program that also provides limited health care services led by volunteer medical students and physicians affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine and Cambridge Health Alliance. Additional, Zara serves as the co-coordinator of Strong Women Strong Girls, a mentoring group that targets underserved communities in the Boston region, and is the president of the Leonard Carmichael Society’s Elderly Outreach club, an on-campus group dedicated towards connecting local elderly homes to surrounding colleges. In her free time, Zara enjoys playing piano, and performing stand-up comedy.
