Elorm Avakame, SUMR '11
As a Rutgers University junior in Public Health, Elorm Avakame spent his 2011 summer as a Penn SUMR scholar and mentee of James Guevara, MD, MPH, an LDI Senior Fellow and Professor of both Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine. The research project they worked on compared minority faculty development at U.S. medical schools and faculty diversity levels at those same schools. After graduating from Rutgers with a degree in Public Health, Avakame was accepted at both Harvard's Kennedy School of Public Policy and the Medical School in a dual studies program for both an MD and MPP degree. He graduated from Harvard in 2018 and is now a pediatric resident at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Watch his graduation speech at Harvard:
