Judy Shea, PhD, a First Mentor
Professor of General Internal Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine Judy Shea, PhD, was one of the three first mentors in the SUMR program. As the program was launched in 2000, she worked with mentee Melissa Pelaez-Merrick. Pelaez-Merrick went on from SUMR to earn her PhD in Clinical Psychology and spend nine years as a Senior Epidemiologist in the Surveillance Branch of the Division of Violence Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Earlier this year, Pelaez-Merrick was named President and CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America, a Chicago-based, national organization that develops programs and interventions designed to prevent the abuse and neglect of children.
