Anna Wexler, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She studies the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding emerging technology, with a particular focus on do-it-yourself medicine and direct-to-consumer health technology. Additional areas of focus include neuroethics and neurotechnology, alternative and off-label therapies, and digital health and online patient communities.
Dr. Wexler is a recipient of a 2018 NIH Director’s Early Independence Award. In addition to her academic research, her popular writing has appeared in outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Slate, and STAT. Prior to her PhD, Dr. Wexler spent several years working as a documentary filmmaker and science/travel writer, and she co-directed and co-produced the feature documentary Unorthodox (2013). She received her PhD from MIT in the HASTS (History, Anthropology, Science, Technology, and Society) program, and was a postdoctoral fellow and instructor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy from 2017 to 2019.
