S. Ryan Greysen, MD, MHS, MA is the Chief of the Section of Hospital Medicine, Executive Director of the Center for Evidence-based Practice (CEP), and Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

As Chief of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Greysen leads the development of academic hospital medicine to promote excellence in education, quality, safety, and research. The Section currently maintains a core faculty of over 50 hospitalists who provide care across at HUP, PPMC, and GSPP. As Executive Director of CEP, he oversees the Center’s mission to perform rigorous assessment and synthesis of evidence to support Penn Medicine as a Learning Healthcare System and lead the adaptation of evidence-based recommendations to address clinical, operational, and scientific challenges across system entities.

Dr. Greysen’s individual research efforts focus on improving hospital and transition care for vulnerable patients, particularly older adults with multiple comorbidities. His funding from the NIH focuses on patient-centered stressors such as poor functional status, mobility, sleep, and engagement in care during hospitalization. His research has been published in leading journals including JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Journal of Hospital Medicine and has been covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, and National Public Radio.

A native Texan, Dr. Greysen received both his BA and MD with Honors from the University of Texas. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine (Primary Care) at George Washington University, graduate study in History and Sociology of Science at Penn (MA ‘03), and post-doctoral training at Yale (MHS) as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. Before coming to Penn, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the Division of Hospital Medicine.
