Caoimhe Duffy, MD, MSc

Caoimhe Duffy, MD, MSc is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on human factors engineering and safety science within the perioperative setting. In 2024, she received the APSF/FAER Mentored Training Grant for her project titled “Resilience Training to Prevent Intubation Harm.” Dr. Duffy is actively involved with the Simulation Assessment Research Group (SARG), a national organization dedicated to advancing health care simulation-based assessments, and the Multi Handoff Collaboration (MHC), a national initiative focused on improving perioperative handoff transitions.

In addition to her academic and research roles, Dr. Duffy is a key member of the Penn Anesthesia chapter for Women in Anesthesiology, where she works on identifying and improving conditions for pregnant and postpartum anesthesiologists. She holds a yellow belt in Six Sigma process improvement and is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Dr. Duffy earned her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed her anesthesia residency with the College of Anesthesiologists of Ireland. During her residency, she received specialized training in airway management and health care simulation, further refining her expertise in these critical areas. She joined the University of Pennsylvania as a perioperative safety fellow in 2020.
