Jeffrey Berns, MD is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is Associate Chief of the Renal, Electrolyte, and Hypertension Division at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Associate Dean and Vice President for Graduate Medical Education. He is a clinical nephrologist practicing at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He was, until recently, Director of the Penn Nephrology Fellowship Training Program and Chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Nephrology Subspecialty Board and ABIM Council, and Co-Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD). He is a past-president of the National Kidney Foundation. He is a Nephrology Editor-in-Chief for UpToDate. His primary areas of interest are in medical education, particularly of nephrology fellows, treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease, advancing utilization of home dialysis therapies, identifying conflicts of interest in the dialysis business, and implementing value-based care for patients with kidney disease.
He received his MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and completed internal medicine residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He then completed a Nephrology Fellowship at Yale University.
