Jiyoun Song, PhD, APRN, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences at Penn Nursing. A nursing scientist and educator, she specializes in artificial intelligence, natural language processing (NLP), and clinical informatics. Dr. Song’s research integrates large-scale electronic health records, conversational transcripts, and multimodal data sources to build predictive models, extract clinically meaningful information, and develop and implement innovative AI tools for health care.
Her projects include designing NLP algorithms for clinical documentation analysis, applying speech and text analytics to understand patient-provider communication, and creating prototype systems such as mobile applications for symptom tracking, medication adherence, and fall risk detection. She also leads workshops on incorporating AI and large language models into nursing research and education, helping clinicians and scientists explore practical uses for emerging technologies.
Song has held leadership roles in international medical informatics organizations, contributing to global collaborations that shape the future of health care data science. Her work connects data science with clinical practice to improve decision-making and workflow efficiency, while supporting the development of ethical, user-centered technologies. Her long-term vision is to design AI systems that integrate seamlessly into care delivery, enhancing patient outcomes and provider experiences. She earned her PhD from Columbia University.
