Joseph Teel, MD

Joseph Teel, MD, FAAFP, is a Professor of Clinical Family Medicine and Community Health. In his clinical practice, Dr. Teel focuses on general primary care for all ages, including prenatal care and reproductive health in the outpatient setting.

Educationally, he previously served as core faculty within the University of Pennsylvania Family Medicine Residency Program. He currently serves as an Advisory Dean within the Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Teel’s administrative experience includes previous leadership roles such as Director of Family Medicine Obstetrics (2013–2019), Medical Director for Penn Family Care (2015–2020), Vice Chair for Clinical Operations (2018–2023) within the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Associate Medical Director for Operations within the Penn Medicine Primary Care network (2021–2023). He now holds the position of Chief of Regional Primary Care for the Penn Medicine Medical Group. Dr. Teel’s experience in primary care, combined with his strategic leadership position overseeing the community-based primary care network, uniquely positions him to contribute to practice-integrated research efforts.

Dr. Teel graduated from Franklin & Marshall College and completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed residency at the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as chief resident in his final year. After completing his training, he relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia, to fulfill his National Health Service Corps commitment at the Johnson Health Center, serving as Medical Director for the last two years. After his service, he moved back to Philadelphia to join the faculty in Penn’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
