Sandra (Sandi) Amaral, MD, MHS is a pediatric nephrologist and clinical researcher. Dr. Amaral serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Nephrology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and as a Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Amaral is also the Medical Director of the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program and the Pediatric Hand Transplant Program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Amaral’s clinical and research career is focused in kidney transplantation. Her clinical and research efforts are centered on improving the everyday health and well-being of children and young adults with kidney disease and reducing disparities in transplant access. Her study designs include clinical trials, cohort studies, and mixed methods. Current research ranges from studies that test the applications of innovative mobile health technologies to engage patients in their treatments, translational studies to detect novel urinary biomarkers of early transplant complications, and studies to investigate health care system barriers to living donation and timely transplant referral for children and adults with kidney disease.
Dr. Amaral holds a Master’s of Health Science in Biostatistics and Clinical Epidemiology from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
