Rural Health in America During COVID-19

Many rural areas are becoming “hotspots” for the COVID-19 pandemic. New evidence suggests that rural populations are at heightened risk for contracting the virus due to factors such as age, race/ethnicity, and prevalence of underlying health conditions. Compared to metropolitan areas, rural communities face even greater shortages of hospital capacity, resources, and protective equipment. Our panel of experts discussed the unique challenges the pandemic poses for the health and economy of rural America, potential policy options to bring relief to rural areas, and the innovative solutions communities and health systems are pursuing to mitigate the pandemic’s effects.
