Decoding the Moment: Cuts to Violence Prevention Programs
Presented by Penn LDI and Tradeoffs

Gun violence is the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Yet in April, the Trump administration announced plans to terminate hundreds of millions of dollars in grants from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that support violence reduction. The Department said the grants no longer aligned with administration priorities. The cuts affect 37 states across urban, suburban, and rural areas. DOJ’s move comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fired most of the staff of the Division of Violence Prevention, weakening the agency’s ability to use public health data to prevent violence.
In the second seminar presented as part of LDI and Tradeoffs’ “Decoding the Moment” series, leading experts will help us understand the programs targeted by these cuts, the lessons we’ve learned about how to prevent gun violence, and what the administration’s actions could mean for communities impacted by this uniquely American epidemic. Speakers will be announced soon.
About the Decoding the Moment series
The Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response, Penn LDI and Tradeoffs launched the virtual event series, Decoding the Moment, to provide timely, evidence-based discussions on key federal policy changes. Through conversations with leading experts, this series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future. The first discussion in the series focused on new rules for vaccine approvals.
Speakers will be announced soon.
