Robert Burke, MD, MS, is the Associate Chief for Research in the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Division of Hospital Medicine at Penn, and a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine. Burke’s research seeks to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and long-term nursing home care for frail older adults. For example, he is leading a VA implementation science program center—the SAGE QUERI—focused on implementing evidence-based practices aligned with the Age-Friendly Health System model. He is also leading projects involving health policy and payment reform, including R01-level funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, leveraging changes in payment policy to improve care for older adults after hospitalization in skilled nursing facilities.
Burke was selected as a 2017–18 Health and Aging Policy Fellow, working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on programs for dual-eligible populations. He matriculated from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
