Allison Hoffman, JD is a Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. Her work examines health insurance regulation, the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and long-term care.
Professor Hoffman was formerly on faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law and a Fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard University. She is the co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of U.S. Health Law and the co-author of the forthcoming 3rd edition of the Politics of Medicare with Theodore R. Marmor.
Professor Hoffman was awarded the 2018 Robert A. Gorman Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her classes include Health Care Law and Policy, Torts, and Health Insurance and Reform. She is Chair Emeritus of the Insurance Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools. Professor Hoffman has extensive work experience in the health care industry. She practiced health law at Ropes & Gray, LLP and advised health care companies on business strategy as a consultant at The Boston Consulting Group and The Bridgespan Group.
Professor Hoffman’s scholarship is published in leading law reviews and peer-reviewed health law, health policy, and medical journals. Her expertise and scholarship have been recognized in Tax Notes, cited by the D.C. Circuit, and featured in policy briefs by the Rand Corporation and Penn LDI. Her work is also featured in various national media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Morningstar, CNBC, Vox, PolitiFact, New York Daily News, and Marketplace by American Public Media.
Professor Hoffman graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and from Yale Law School.
