Carmen Alvarez, PhD, CRNP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at Penn Nursing. Dr. Alvarez is a family nurse practitioner, midwife, and scientist who collaborates with scholars, interdisciplinary practitioners, and community partners for collective action to advance health care for minoritized and underserved communities. Her research advances understanding of underserved survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and emphasizes the use of evidence-based practices. As a front-line provider, Dr. Alvarez has partnered with community members and clinics to develop culturally relevant, community-led interventions for Latina survivors of IPV and ACEs. Dr. Alvarez’s most recent work— an intervention for Latina immigrants with a history of ACEs and depression/anxiety symptoms — was supported by the RWJF Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program. Dr. Alvarez received her BSN and MSN from Emory University and her PhD from the University of Michigan.
