Become an LDI Fellow

LDI Senior Fellows are required to be independent researchers in areas that are aligned with LDI’s mission to improve health and health care by catalyzing collaborative, multidisciplinary research that influences policy and practice, and to demonstrate active scholarship in an area(s) that shapes and expands the knowledge required to improve population health, health care delivery, and health policy.

Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors with a current faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania and/or CHOP can apply to be LDI Senior Fellows. Selection of LDI Senior Fellows is based on:

• Active scholarship and professional achievement in an area(s) that shapes and expands the knowledge required to improve population health, health care delivery, and health policy;
• Demonstrated and continued involvement with research, policy, or distinguished leadership in these areas;
• Skills and resources likely to contribute to achieving LDI’s mission; and
• Commitment to be an active participant in the work of LDI.

The initial appointment for LDI Senior Fellows is for three years. To qualify for reappointment, LDI Senior Fellows must demonstrate having had active, regular engagement in activities related to LDI’s mission. Qualifying activities include forms of collaboration, participation, and engagement with LDI and the LDI community.

• Spend approximately 75-100 hours per year on LDI activities including collaboration, participation, and engagement with LDI and the LDI community. Qualifying activities include:
  • Workshops, Seminars, and Networking Events
    • Regularly attend LDI research and policy seminars
    • Regularly attend LDI networking events (e.g. Fall Kickoff, Winter Party, AcademyHealth Party, Health Policy Retreat, etc.)
    • Serve as a speaker or moderator for an LDI seminar or conference
    • Participate in planning group for a seminar, conference, or other event
  • Collaboration
    • Participate in and regularly attend an LDI working group
    • Organize a convening or working group funded by LDI
  • Research Resources
    • Apply for an LDI funding opportunity
    • Generate/allocate support for a new LDI funding opportunity
    • Facilitate new access to data or partnerships for research use by the LDI community
  • Translation and Dissemination Resources
    • Present public testimony or talks on behalf of LDI
    • Author blogs or briefs for LDI on behalf of its mission
    • Author op-eds on behalf of LDI
  • Mentorship
    • Serve as a mentor to a SUMR/GEAR UP/CICADA Scholar 
  • Other
    • Serve on an LDI committee
    • Teach within an LDI educational or training program
    • Facilitate connections with leaders or partners that advance LDI’s mission 
• Use LDI affiliation on all manuscripts and presentations related to LDI’s mission.
• Provide LDI with regular updates on health policy/health systems research, and other policy and educational activities.

Applications will undergo a multi-level review process by LDI staff and final appointment decisions will be made by an LDI leadership committee. This leadership committee meets once per month, so pending the date of submission, some applicants may experience a waiting period prior to their appointment notification.

Upon approval for Senior Fellow appointment, LDI staff will contact you to submit a form with the materials required for your page in the LDI Fellow Directory, including items such as your bio, headshot, and areas of expertise. The form also asks for you to indicate the ways in which you plan to engage with LDI to meet the 75-100 hour requirement. Please note that your Senior Fellow appointment will not be finalized until we have received this form.

Trainees affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania or Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, who are actively involved with health economics and/or health services research. To be considered, you must be a (a) postdoctoral fellow, (b) PhD student, or (c) clinical fellow who is enrolled in a research degree program, e.g., MSHP. Instructors, research associates, and/or affiliates who have completed a research degree are eligible to apply if their appointment is three years or less. Residents are not eligible to apply to the Associate Fellows program.

Acceptance into the Associate Fellows program depends on the applicant’s research activities and alignment with LDI’s mission. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. If accepted, Associate Fellows are appointed for the duration of their education or training program and are expected to actively participate in LDI and within the Associate Fellow community.
