Major: Economics and Integrated Health Studies

Sanjana Kashyap is a junior pursuing a double major in Economics and Integrated Health Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago within the GPPA Medical Scholars BS/MD program. She is interested in the realm of health economic research concerning older adults and its role in advancing equitable health care delivery. This interest is shaped by her upbringing in Australia & New Zealand, where the healthcare systems differ significantly from the U.S system. After graduation, Kashyap hopes to attend medical school with the goal of getting involved in health policy.

As a SUMR scholar, Kashyap is working on two distinct projects. Under the guidance of Dr. Ari Friedman, Kashyap is utilizing econometric methods to assess the differential impact of Emergency Department capacity strain on older adults. Additionally, she is collaborating with Dr. Anna Jo Smith to measure the variability in gynecological oncological outcomes among veterans using the CA-125 biomarker.

At UIC, Kashyap is actively involved in organizations such as Colleges Against Cancer and the Portfolio Management Team. She works as an RA for clinical research at UChicago and is also involved in a budget proposal project focused on aging populations. In her free time, she loves exploring cafes in different Chicago neighborhoods as well as playing piano, cricket and rugby!
