“Gynecologic Oncology: “Bridging Surgical and Medical Oncology in Practice, Performance, and Payment”

Emily Ko, MD, MSCR is an assistant professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Gynecologic Oncology. As a clinician-researcher, she provides surgical and chemotherapy treatments for women with gynecologic cancers or precancerous conditions. Additionally, Dr. Ko is a researcher with a focus on health-services research, population science-based studies and clinical trials. Her primary areas of interest include endometrial cancer and cervical cancer. Dr. Ko has received institutional funding as well as national grant funding, including from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists Conquer Cancer Foundation, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group. In 2016, she was awarded the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant to evaluate “Gynecologic Oncology patterns of care, health care utilization, and practice optimization.” Her extramural activities include working with national leaders in the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO), currently serving as the Co-Chair for the Health Policy and Socioeconomic Committee, and previously serving as the Chair of the Physicians Payment Reform Taskforce. At Penn, Dr. Ko is a full member of the Abramson Cancer Center, Clinical Cancer Control division. She also directs the Gynecologic Oncology Population Science Research Group, and mentors multiple trainees through the School of Medicine, and MSCE and MSHP programs. Together, her clinical practice, research efforts, and service commitments have converged, with a focus on evaluations of practice patterns, quality improvement, and strategies to adapt practices in the era of payment reform.
