William H. Dow is Henry J. Kaiser Professor of Health Economics at the University of California–Berkeley’s School of Public Health, where he is Head of the Division of Health Policy and Management. He is also Associate Director of the Berkeley Population Center and the Center on the Economics and Demography of Aging. In addition he is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and previously served as Senior Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He received his PhD in economics from Yale University.

Dow’s research analyzes economic aspects of health insurance, health behaviors, and health and demographic outcomes, in settings spanning the globe. He was recently co-PI of the Tanzanian RESPECT study testing incentives to reduce risky sexual behavior, he is PI of the CRELES Costa Rican Health and Retirement Survey studying determinants of Costa Rica’s low mortality rates, and he is PI of a trial testing behavioral economics approaches to improving HIV screening rates in the U.S.

Honors include the John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators awarded by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and the Kenneth J. Arrow Award given by the International Health Economics Association.
