Health Care Access & Coverage
Rural Hospitals at a Crossroad: Access, Quality, and Financing
A Conversation with Paula Chatterjee, MD, MPH, Ramona Hicks, RN, Tony Leys, and Harold Miller, MS, moderated by Rachel M. Werner, MD, PhD
Concerns about access and quality of care in America’s rural hospitals are not new. But recently, their increasingly precarious financial position has led to a large number of closures, adding new urgency to policy debates about how to save them. Policymakers have tried various payment approaches to stabilize the finances of rural hospitals and bolster patient access to health care in rural areas, but challenges persist. Penn LDI and a panel of experts unpacked the payment and financing of rural hospitals and addressed the questions confronting policymakers as they work to improve rural health care.
