Hospital mergers and a recent acceleration of physician practice consolidation have changed the U.S. health care system. The result is typically increased prices with no measurable improvement in quality. And yet, spurred on by market forces including alternative payment models, investments by private equity, and COVID-19 pandemic-related financial hardships, experts predict a continuation of the trend towards consolidation.
