Recessions and Health in the Time of COVID-19

As a country, we are facing two unprecedented disasters: a pandemic the likes of which we have not seen in over a century, and projections for an economic downturn and unemployment that will rival the Great Depression. This virtual seminar featured Atheendar Venkataramani, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy and a staff physician at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and they discussed the current economic crisis and its long-term health consequences. What do history and research tell us about what happens to health during an economic recession? How might this time be different, when economic activity has been halted by fears of social interaction rather than slowed by typical economic forces? And how will this affect low-income people, who were already experiencing worsening mortality and rising “deaths of despair”? Rachel Werner, LDI Executive Director, moderated the discussion and took questions from the audience.
