Amol Navathe, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Health Policy and Medicine and the founding Director of The Parity Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Staff Physician at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and serves as the Chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), a non-partisan agency that advises the U.S. Congress on Medicare policy, after previously serving as vice chair and a commissioner.
Dr. Navathe’s research focuses on Medicare policy, payment model design and evaluation, and the use of behavioral economics to improve clinician decision-making and health care value. His work emphasizes the translation of rigorous evidence into real-world policy and practice. He co-founded and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Health Care: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation. His research has been published in leading journals, including Science, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), and The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
In addition to his academic work, he previously served on the boards of directors of Hawaii Medical Services Association and SCAN Health Plan. He has also served as co-founder of the health care technology companies Otter Health and Embedded Healthcare (now Clarify Health), companies that apply behavioral economics to improve affordability and quality.
Dr. Navathe completed his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and his postgraduate training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. He earned his PhD in Health Care Management and Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
