Ebbing Lautenbach, MD, MSCE

Ebbing Lautenbach, MD, MSCE is a Professor of Medicine at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Lautenbach’s research focuses on antibiotic use, antimicrobial resistance, outbreak investigation, and epidemiologic methods in the study of infectious diseases. This research focuses on various health care settings including acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities. With regard to gram-positive infections, his specific focus has been on patterns of use of vancomycin, vancomycin intolerance, and the relationship of the use of this agent to the epidemiology of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal (VRE) infections. Furthermore, he is investigating the emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance among gram-negative organisms, particularly how the dissemination of this resistance mechanism responds to manipulations of hospital antimicrobial formularies. Finally, Dr. Lautenbach is studying patterns of use of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics, as well as how such use patterns affect current trends in resistance to these agents.
