Joseph F. Sobanko, MD, MBA

Joseph F. Sobanko, MD, MBA is an Associate Professor and Director of Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania,where he trains medical students, residents, and fellows. He is a dermatologic surgeon with a practice restricted to Mohs micrographic surgery, surgical reconstruction, laser surgery, and cosmetic dermatology. He has published over 140 scientific articles, 12 textbook chapters and is co-author of the textbook: Safety in Office-Based Dermatologic Surgery.

Dr. Sobanko’s research, supported by the Dermatology Foundation through a Career Development Award and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Cutting Edge Award, investigates the importance of physical appearance and how its alteration can significantly impact the lives of patients. Additional research interests of his include information asymmetry among health care stakeholders, melanoma management, cost-effective care, and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures. Dr. Sobanko has a passion for global health and he performs surgery for skin cancer patients abroad. His mission work includes trips to Brasil, South Africa, and Vietnam.

He holds an MD from Stony Brook University and completed Dermatology residency at Georgetown University Hospital where he served as chief resident. His fellowship in Advanced Dermatologic Surgery was completed at Oregon Health & Science University. He received his MBA from The Wharton School.
