Melissa (Mellie) Montoya, MD, MA is a Complex Family Planning Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania with a strong interest in the intersection between medicine, public health, and reproductive justice. She has a background in bioethics and medical humanities allowing her scholarship to focus on the ways in which these academic disciplines can be applied to reproductive health care. Her current research focuses on treatment of early pregnancy loss and addresses challenges experienced by pregnant patients in accessing high-quality care. Her overarching research career goal is to advance the ethical delivery of evidence-based care across the spectrum of reproductive health. She also has an interest in quality improvement and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Health Policy Research with a concentration in health care quality and safety.
Dr. Montoya obtained her undergraduate degree from Stanford University. She received her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where she also completed her master’s in Bioethics and Medical Humanities. She completed her obstetrics & gynecology residency training at Duke University.
